Figures from 2018/19 to 2021/22 and 2023/24 use the Guardian's older student FTE method, while 2024/25 (the 2027 guide) uses its revised Data Futures-based method – the two are not directly comparable, which is marked wherever they meet.
SSR is Guardian's calculation of full-time-equivalent students per full-time-equivalent academic staff (excluding research-only staff), by HESA cost centre mapped to Guardian subject groupings. Figures do not map exactly onto school, faculty or department structures. Subject categories have shifted over the years – a handful of older or merged categories (for example the old combined "Business, Management and Marketing" grouping, or "Nursing" as one category) are left out of the year-by-year and trend views since they don't map onto a single current subject, and a few other renamed categories are approximated onto the closest current one. 2022/23 data is not held in this tool.
